Caring for your light cable
- Avoid tight bends in the cable and stress at the connectors
- Unplug the cable from the device when storing - (Total Lamp - unplug both ends)
- Remove the cable from the connector holding the plug - do not pull on the cable
- Coil the cable loosely when storing - see technique below
- Do not wrap around the control unit or loupe
- Use clothing clips to guide the cable close to the body to prevent snagging
- Take care when closing a case not to trap the cable in the edge when closing
- Place the control unit so that the cable does not have a tight bend as it exits
Here’s a guide to the Over-Under Cable Coiling Technique (a professional method used to coil cables in a way that prevents tangling, twisting, and kinking):
Step 1: Make the First (Over) Loop
- Hold one end of the cable in your non-dominant hand.
- Use your dominant hand to create a standard loop.
- The loop follows the cable’s natural curve.
Step 2: Make the Second (Under) Loop
- Grab the next section of cable.
- Rotate your wrist so your palm faces up, allowing the cable to twist naturally.
- This reverses the loop direction without stressing the cable.
Step 3: Continue Over-Under Pattern
- Repeat the alternating over-under loops.
- Keep the loops even and relaxed.
Step 4: Secure the Cable
- Use a Velcro strap or cable tie to keep it neat.
- When uncoiling, it should straighten smoothly without tangles.
